Shakespeare theatre

The Shakespeare Theatre of the college, functioning under the aegis of the English department, was founded in 1937 by the legendary teacher and critic Prof M P Paul, who also directed the first production of Macbeth that year. It is one of the very few full-fledged Shakespeare theatres in India. So far, we have brought out 20 productions with multiple performances. Prof C A Sheppard, Prof A E Augustine and many other great teachers of the department have taken immense efforts over the years for its continuation. Padmasree Prem Nazir, the evergreen hero of Malayalam movies, made his acting debut through this theatre. The much acclaimed productions of the theatre include Macbeth (1937, 1969, 1971, 1986, 2007), The Merchant of Venice (1951, 1952, 1983), King Lear (1952, 1961), Hamlet (1953, 1999), Othello (1964, 1965, 1991), Julius Caesar (1989), Romeo and Juliet (1994), Antony and Cleopatra (1997), The Tempest (2011) and Henry IV, Part 1 (2018).
