Library Science

The Department of Library and Information Science was established in 2002. The department offers MLISc in the self-financing stream. The BLISc began in 2002, followed by the MLISc in 2004. St Berchmans College was the first in Mahatma Gandhi University to offer Library and Information Science courses, as well as the first in Kerala to offer an MLISc programme. Library science is an interdisciplinary field that combines the principles and practices of library administration. The disciplines that are associated with library science are education, management, and Information technology. The main objective of any library is to accumulate, organize, preserve and disseminate information resources. The role of library science is to provide a combined service of research and teaching. It contributes to the knowledge base of professionals and helps in preparing them to achieve excellence. The library science course will help in designing and improving libraries. In the digital age, the importance of librarians and library science is increasing. Library professionals are fully engaged in providing information services to professionals and organizations. The demand for high-quality, filtered information has increased in the modern digital age, and librarians now play an important role in meeting that demand. In this digital age, this has expanded the scope of library science. Individuals interested in studying library and information science have a wide range of job opportunities, including traditional library work in academic institutions such as schools, colleges, IITs, IIMs, universities, and so on, public libraries such as panchayath, municipal, district, state, and national libraries, archivist work in archives and museums, and information specialists in research institutes and MNCs. Demand for future librarians is expected to come from corporate entities looking for research experts skilled in computer databases and information organization, also known as information officers, information scientists, information professionals, and so on. DIVYANGJAN DHWANI AUDIO LIBRAY Phase 1 The Department of Library and Information Science at SB College has established the Dhwani Audio Library as part of the DIVYANGJAN initiative. This free service provides audio books for PG students with visual impairments or disabilities that hinder their use of printed materials. Utilizing Audacity software, printed books are converted into audio format, enabling students to listen to them on their devices. The converted audio books primarily cover the prescribed syllabus of SB College and MG University. Copyright permissions are obtained to ensure compliance. Trained student volunteers are responsible for converting the textbooks, and the audio books are made accessible to students in need within the college and university. This initiative highlights a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility in education, empowering visually impaired students and enhancing their learning experience. Phase 2 In the second phase of the Dhwani Audio Library initiative, the Department of Library and Information Science collaborated with the Govt School for Blind OLASSA to convert children's literature from their library into audio format. The objective was to provide visually impaired and blind students at the Govt School for Blind OLASSA with access to a collection of children's books in an audio format tailored to their needs. Trained student volunteers, familiar with Audacity software, carried out the conversion process. A range of children's literature, including storybooks, fairy tales, fables, and educational material, was selected for conversion. The volunteers followed established guidelines and techniques to ensure high-quality audio books with expressive narration and effective storytelling. The converted audio books underwent a quality assurance process for clarity and accurate narration. During the 61st Annual Day Celebration, the distribution of the audio books at the Govt School for Blind OLASSA marked a significant milestone in the initiative. By providing access to the audio files through accessible devices or platforms, the distribution event aimed to empower visually impaired students to independently engage with the audio books. This collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to promoting literacy, imagination, and inclusive educational opportunities, making a positive impact on the educational journey and overall development of visually impaired and blind students.
