The department of Commerce was established in 1962, with the commencement of the Pre-Degree course. Mr. C K Jose was the first member of the Department. Initially, the department of Commerce was attached to the department of Economics. When affiliation for BCom was granted in 1963, the Department became independent. Affiliation for MCom was granted in 1981. The department of Commerce was recognized as an approved research center of Mahatma Gandhi University in 2008 offering a doctoral programme in Commerce.
Business and trade-related newspapers, journals related to commerce, industry, and business are made available for students and research scholars
It contains about 267 books and more than 300 project reports.
The Golden Jubilee Memorial Endowment Lecture was instituted in the year 2015 by Dr. Stephen Mathews, former Head of the Department of Commerce.
The Department of Commerce has been organising an All Kerala Commerce Fest for higher secondary students – Teen’s Causerie – since 2014 with the aim of offering a platform to teenagers to showcase their talents and skills. Further, it aims at making the higher secondary students informed of the developments that are taking place in the fields Business Commerce and Management.
Commerce Causerie is an intercollegiate commerce fest organized by the Department of Commerce, since 1995. The festival is a high-profile event that attracts students from colleges in and around Kerala to compete on a big scale and showcase their talents. This mega fest is a forum for similar minds to interact, share and discuss the latest happenings in the field of Management and Commerce and help the growth of business in India in the future. Apart from the technical events which include: Business Quiz, Best Manager, Simulated Stock Market, Business Plan Presentations etc. The festival will also have a host of non-technical events which include Ad Game, Treasure hunt, Event Management, Choreography, Photography, etc.
