The Department of Biotechnology, established in the year 2001, offers undergraduate and postgraduate programme in Biotechnology under the self- financing stream. The Department strives to excel in providing students with an in-depth understanding in emerging areas of Biotechnology. The Undergraduate Programme in Biotechnology is designed to build deeper subject knowledge and greater academic exposure thereby preparing students more effectively for higher studies. Alongside the core Biotechnology programme, students have the flexibility to choose a range of complementary subjects from diverse disciplines, thereby fostering interdisciplinary learning.
The M.Sc Biotechnology programme introduced in 2002 places special emphasis on lab-oriented training and is supported by a well- structured curriculum designed to develop expertise in the field. The programme equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to excel as professionals in Biotechnology. Collaborative research, summer internships and training programmes at reputed universities, research institutes, and leading industries enable students to enhance their practical exposure and employability.
The mission of the Department is to nurture a new generation of scientific leaders equipped with scientific rigor, critical thinking abilities, ethical values, and multitasking managerial skills, enabling them to succeed in the rapidly evolving, technology-driven sectors of industry and academia.

Instrumentation facilities in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Biotechnology laboratories
The undergraduate and postgraduate Biotechnology laboratories at St. Berchmans College are well-equipped with facilities and instrumentation that support both basic and applied aspects of life science education. Biotechnology laboratories support practical experiments across diverse fields such as Microbiology, Molecular biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Plant tissue culture, and Immunology. There by providing students hands-on expertise and skill-based knowledge in fundamental and applied aspects of biotechnology.
Alumni Talk Series
A program where former students share their professional experiences, insights, and guidance to inspire and mentor current students.
• Alumni Talk Series was inaugurated and an expert talk on the topic “Chromatin Remodelling in B Cell Response” by Dr Ajay Abraham, Research Scientist, North Western University was conducted on 7 July, 2025.
Fest
• The Department organizes inter-collegiate biofest- APEIRON every year.
Association Activities
• As part of Association Inauguration 2024, an expert talk was conducted on the topic “Engineering the Future: Bio Mimetic Scaffolds and Hydro Gels for Tissue Regeneration” by Dr. Yogesh Bharat Dalvi Scientist, Pushpagiri Research Centre followed by the various cultural events of the students on 16 August, 2024.
• An inter- collegiate oral presentation competition “Nexus” was conducted on the topic “Green Biotechnology for Sustainable Future” on 11 Dec, 2024.
• As part of Association Inauguration 2025, an invited talk on the topic “What I wish I had done” by Dr CN Manoj CEO, Pelican Biotech and Chemical Lab Pvt Ltd, followed by the various cultural events of the students was conducted on 6 August, 2025.
• Association conducts department level Onam and Christmas celebrations every year and also ensures students participation in department, college and inter-collegiate level presentation and quiz competitions and also arts and sports events.
Seminars/Conferences/Workshops
• An expert lecture was conducted on relevance of “Yoga, Ayurveda and Siddha Practices in Current Lifestyle” by Dr. Medona Tomy (BAMS) on 31 Dec, 2024.
• Workshop was organized on “Harnessing Neuro Plasticity for Mental Well-Being” by Dr. Baby Chakrapani, Director, Centre for Neurosciences, CUSAT on 12 Dec, 2025
• Workshop was organized on “Ethical use of AI in Education and Research” by Dr Jubi Mathew, Asst. Prof., Amal Jyothi College of Engineering on 3 Feb, 2026.
