Department of Syriac
In 1938 Syriac was introduced as Second Language for the Intermediate and Degree classes. Syriac was offered as Second Language from 1937 onwards. Rev. Fr. Joseph Hadrian TOCD was the first member of the Faculty. Rev. Fr. K.V. Joseph took the place of Hadrian as Bursar and Professor of Syriac in 1939 when the latter was relieved. Rev. Fr. C.T. Kottaram. Rev. Fr. L.J. Chittoor (later Monsignor and Manager) and Rev. Fr. Mathew Kavukatt (who became Bishop and Patron later) were notable presences in the Syriac department. A student who selects Syriac as a second language for the undergraduate programme learns the fundamentals of Syriac grammar, Syriac literature, and the history of the syrian church, as well as the Peshitha Bible.
